Honda Civic Type-R turbo concept
The long awaited 4th generation Honda Civic Type R will be with us later this year, and it is dramatically different to the versions before it.
The 1st generation Type R, released in 1997, kick started a Type R craze that has lasted ever since. The original was powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine that was made famous thanks to it having the highest power output of any engine of its capacity at the time. The second generation, which was arguably the best, was powered by a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine that in Europe produced 200 bhp. The beauty of both of these engines was that they loved to be revved, and drivers had to push the engine as far as possible to really get a move on.
The third generation Civic was not a return to form after the success of the second generation. The third version was fatter and heavier than the second generation yet it only had 1 bhp more. The result of this was that the Civic Type R became a bit of a joke, and it could not hold a candle to the likes of the Golf GTI.
As cars have grown in size, so have the Civic’s competitors. When the second generation was released its main competition was the Renault Clio 182. Now, the Civic is more Astra GTC, Renault Megane and VW Golf like in size. Therefore, a power output of near 200 bhp would not cut it this time around, and it would likely alienate the few modern Type R fans out there.
Thankfully, Honda have seen sense since the disastrous third generation, and the fourth is set to be the fastest ever according to Vertu Honda Lincoln.
Power will come from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The engine is not VTEC, but it will still rev past 6,500 rpm, according to Honda. Honda says that the car will develop at least 276 bhp, which puts it way above the Golf GTI and in the league of the Vauxhall Astra VXR and Renault Megane RS.
The car has been developed in large part at the Nurburgring, and Honda plans for their hot hatch to be the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the world-famous circuit. In order to achieve that, the car will need to be equipped with a limited-slip differential and close to 300 bhp. Therefore, fans can expect the final car to actually have over 290 ponies.
