Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo has announced it will unveil the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week. Based on the road-going XC60 crossover, the concept as “an electric car, a highly economical hybrid and a powerful high-performance car all rolled into one.”
“This world-class gasoline plug-in hybrid technology, featuring a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine from our upcoming Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family, will reach our American showrooms in a couple of years. However, it is too early to say which model will be the first to feature this solution,” according to Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept features a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine up front, with electric motor are optimized to produce a combined power output of 280 PS (206 kW / 276 hp) + 70 PS (51 kW / 69 hp) and maximum torque of 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) + 200 Nm (149 lb-ft) respectively. Power is shifted via a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
In Pure mode, the vehicle is powered solely by its electric motor with a range of up to 35 miles. The electric motor is rated at 70 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and is used to drive the rear axle. It is powered by a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery that charged in as little as 3.5 hours. Charging using a 110V outlet will require 7.5 hours for a full charge.
Finally, in Power mode electric motor adds another 70 horsepower, both power sources work together to deliver maximum output of up to 350 horsepower. The system’s combined output is 350HP enough to accelerate the car from 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in just 5.8 seconds when the “Power” mode is selected.
When Pure is selected via a button on the instrument panel, the hybrid XC60 can be propelled solely by the electric motor for about 45 kilometers (28 miles). The default “Hybrid”, the gas engine works in tandem with the electric motor, mode provides an average consumption of just 2.3 lt/100 km (102.2 mpg US), a maximum range of up to 960 km (600 miles) while emitting just 53 g/km of CO2.
Volvo has yet to announce any production plans for the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept or specific price.
