Ford has premiered its all-new EcoSport compact SUV prior to its public unveiling at the new 2012 Delhi Auto Expo tomorrow. It was revealed by Ford CEO Alan Mulally at a press conference earlier today.
The Ford EcoSport is defined as being targeted to consumers who want a sporty and casual car that stands out, but in an intelligent and sustainable way. The vehicle is based on the Blue Oval’s global B-segment platform, used in other subcompacts like the Fiesta and upcoming B-Max.
On the exterior, the EcoSport’s lines incorporate styling cues from Ford’s latest design language. Modern, oblique headlamps frame a high-mounted trapezoidal grille, plastic molding on the lower body. The rear of the vehicle features a large rear window, which wraps around to the sides along with distinctive taillights.
Under the hood is a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which thanks to a host of technologies including turbocharging with 120 PS (118 hp / 88 kW) and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) available from 1,300-4,500 rpm, direct injection and variable valve timing, is similar in performance to a regular 1.6-liter unit.
The Ford EcoSport will be produced at ultra-modern, flexible assembly plants in India and Brazil, as well as other markets to be announced at a later time. Ultimately, this engine will be made available in Ford models in China, Europe, North America and other regions. Pricing and a full set of technical specifications for India will be released during the New Delhi Auto Expo.
