2012 Audi RS1 spied at Nürburgring

Captured here by crafty spy photographers, these are the very first spy shots of the 2012 Audi RS1 while testing in and around the Nürburgring race circuit, a car that could be on sale by the middle of next year.
And now for the big question: but what the prototype is sporting under the hood? Earlier this year, Audi S1 testing on the ring and that model is expected to come with a turbocharged 1.6-liter unit that produces 220 PS (162 kW / 217 hp) paired to a new quattro all-wheel drive system. So, Audi has been working on a Quattro all-wheel drive system for the Audi A1 that is similar to the one found in Audi A3 and Audi TT RS models.

In addition to the potent powerplant, expect a series of weight saving modifications and a standard quattro all-wheel drive system. A six-speed manual is also likely to be standard, though a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch unit may be offered as an option. That proves that Audi can fit the 2.5 liter TFSI unit into the A1’s engine bay with a quattro system and a six-speed manual gearbox too. But output will likely be dialed to much less than the 340 PS (250 kW / 335 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb ft) of torque of the 2.5 TFSI unit on the Audi TT-RS and RS3 models.
