Captured here by crafty spy photographers, these are the very first spy shots of the 2012 Audi RS1 while testing in and around the Nürburgring race circuit, a car that could be on sale by the middle of next year.
And now for the big question: but what the prototype is sporting under the hood? Earlier this year, Audi S1 testing on the ring and that model is expected to come with a turbocharged 1.6-liter unit that produces 220 PS (162 kW / 217 hp) paired to a new quattro all-wheel drive system. So, Audi has been working on a Quattro all-wheel drive system for the Audi A1 that is similar to the one found in Audi A3 and Audi TT RS models.

In addition to the potent powerplant, expect a series of weight saving modifications and a standard quattro all-wheel drive system. A six-speed manual is also likely to be standard, though a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch unit may be offered as an option. That proves that Audi can fit the 2.5 liter TFSI unit into the A1′s engine bay with a quattro system and a six-speed manual gearbox too. But output will likely be dialed to much less than the 340 PS (250 kW / 335 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb ft) of torque of the 2.5 TFSI unit on the Audi TT-RS and RS3 models.
